Our daily English newspaper The International Herald Tribune/The Asahi Shimbun (Herald Tribune/Asahi) provides extensive reporting from around the world and here in Japan. The paper was launched in April 2001, taking over Asahi Evening News, our English evening paper which was started in 1954.
The Herald Tribune/Asahi is co-published by the Paris-based International Herald Tribune (IHT) and The Asahi Shimbun. The first half of the newspaper consists of international news provided by the IHT; the latter half delivers major articles from The Asahi Shimbun that are translated into English, and original articles written by The Asahi Shimbun’s International Division staff writers.
The IHT is published by the New York Times. The paper is currently printed in 36 cities around the world and sold in more than 180 countries. It is a quality newspaper that offers articles and editorials written from a global prospective, and it is the choice newspaper favored by opinion leaders and business executives around the world.
The latter section of the newspaper is edited by The Asahi Shimbun. It carries editorials and the popular “Tensei Jingo” (Vox Populi, Vox Dei) column alongside news articles, transmitting the “voice” of Japan towards the global community. The Asahi Shimbun’s major articles published in the paper are also available at the Internet site at asahi.com.
The Asahi Shimbun continues to enhance collaboration with various Asian media through the articles and pages of The Herald Tribune/Asahi. The paper thrives as Asahi’s international center for conveying information globally.
The Asahi Shimbun also publishes the “Asahi Weekly,” a bilingual English-Japanese language newspaper which can be used as an English study tool for readers who want to improve their language skills while reading about topics from around the world. English articles in the Weekly are enhanced with Japanese-language footnotes while covering such themes as news, music, travel and cinema. The Asahi Weekly helps its readers with a section that offers pointers as to writing better English, and appreciating articles in an English newspaper. The Asahi Weekly provides enjoyable reading material for a wide range of readers, from those who have just begun studying English, to those with higher language skills. The Asahi Weekly also puts out a popular monthly CD “Eigo ga Kikoeru Mimi” (sold separately) which is a recording of articles picked up from the newspaper pages and read by native speakers.
