Domestic and Overseas Networks

Local and Global News Gathering Networks

As Japan’s leading national newspaper, The Asahi Shimbun maintains a finely meshed regional news-gathering network in Japan and worldwide operations to deliver international news swiftly and accurately to its readers.

The domestic news network has Head Offices in Tokyo, Osaka, Seibu and Nagoya, at which local editions are edited and published in order to incorporate regional content. In addition, the network includes the Hokkaido Office in Sapporo, the Fukuoka Office in Fukuoka, and general bureaus in 44 prefectures that serve as bases for local reporting and coverage. Furthermore, 240 bureaus are set up in all major cities across the country from Wakkanai in the far north to Amami in the south. Some 800 reporters cover crime and accidents, new developments in local politics, regional economies and culture, providing reportage on a wide array of events close to home and news topics that have direct impact on our daily lives. Their stories are carried nationwide in The Asahi Shimbun.

The overseas network comprises five general bureaus: the American (Washington, D.C.), European (London), Middle Eastern and African (Cairo), Asian (Bangkok), and Chinese (Beijing). A bureau was newly opened in Havana, Cuba, in 2007. We have presence in about 30 locations, with 53 correspondents in residence, reporting on an ever-changing world driven by increasing globalization, providing broad coverage ranging from terrorist attacks and international disputes to diverse topics pertaining to each country, including politics, economics and sports.
