Vanessa Williams, a Grammy Award-winning artist and successful actress, came to Japan for her live performances. Asahi.com reports on her performance and an interview. (Interview & Text by Harumi Iwase)

In 1988, Vanessa Williams debuted as a singer. The song "Save the Best for Last" was ranked No. 1 on the U.S. charts in 1992, and the single "Colors of the Wind" from the Disney film "Pocahontas" was awarded a Grammy in 1995. She has been successful as a singer, and at the same time, she has conquered Broadway, movies and TV dramas such as "Desperate Housewives".

At a performance held at Billboard Live Osaka on June 8, she sang her original hit songs, such as "Colors of the Wind". She also performed some new songs from her latest album, "The Real Thing", released in 2009. She sang "Close to You" with her silky voice and really attracted the audience. The climax of her performance was the classic ballad "Save the Best for Last". The last song was "Betcha Never". The gorgeous sequined dress she wore suited her well, and she sang and danced the Latin-style number energetically. The stage was full of active energy.

"Thank you for showing up and listening to my songs", Vanessa said. Her humble and sincere attitude made the fans feel indeed close to her.

In an interview after the performance, Vanessa said: "I am happy that we got a chance to come because I did not know whether it's going to be canceled or not. So I thank the whole band for coming over". And she gave a message to all Japanese: "There is always another day. So always have hope and faith that you will get another opportunity. Whether it's a bad day, whether it's a bad week or whether it's a bad circumstance, know that you have another chance to make it better".
