Prime Minister Shinzo Abe decided to extend the nationwide state of emergency until May 31 to contain the spread of the new coronavirus, sources said on May 3.
The state of emergency, which was first declared for Tokyo and six prefectures on April 7, was to end May 6, but Abe said last week that he plans to extend it for about a month.
Abe is scheduled to formally announce the decision and the details of related policy measures on May 4.
