Tokyo confirmed fewer than 100 fresh cases of COVID-19 for the eighth straight day on Oct. 16, metropolitan government officials said.

The latest tally stood at 66, bringing the daily average of new cases for the week ending Oct. 16 to 63.3, or 49 percent of the figure for the previous week.

Of the latest cases, 14 patients were in their 30s, 13 in their 20s, 12 in their 40s and eight in their 70s. Fifteen patients were aged 65 or older.

There were also 35 patients with symptoms serious enough to require the use of a ventilator or other equipment to breathe. The figure was a decrease of four from the previous day.
