Tokyo reported 26,313 fresh cases of the novel coronavirus on Aug. 7, down 5,228 from the previous Sunday.

It was the first time in six days for the daily tally to fall below 30,000.

Metropolitan government officials also reported 12 related deaths the same day.

Hiroshima Prefecture posted a record 6,029 new cases on Aug. 7.

Tokushima Prefecture on the island of Shikoku also logged a record number of new cases, 1,118, marking the first time for the tally there to exceed 1,000.
