" Five Days for a New Future "
Asahi World Forum 2020

The Asahi World Forum has been a major platform on which the Asahi Shimbun Company practices its motto as a news organization, “Let’s think together and create together”. This year, we will hold the international symposium over 5 days from October 11 (Sun) to 15 (Thu) with a main tile, “Five Days for a New Future”. It will be streamed online and held without physical audiences due to the coronavirus situation.

The coronavirus pandemic has made a huge impact not just on our lifestyle but on international relations and the global economy. Will we be able to get back to our previous normalcy when, or if, the virus scare is over. If we can’t, then what are the things we need to adjust and how should we do so in order to make the world a better place, while living with the virus. We will discuss this question, bearing in mind the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

" Diversity and Sustainability - Are We Up to the Challenges for the Future of Mankind? "
Asahi World Forum 2019

Meanwhile, if you take a global look, rapid advance in technology, IT and biotechnology in particular, is changing our way of life and our way of thinking in a fundamental manner. We are increasingly observing extreme weather events like heat wave and heavy rain as well as huge cyclones and wild fires. The survival of modern civilization as we know it will depend on whether or not we will be able to take effective measures against global warming.

Are we up to these challenges? Prominent speakers and panelists will address this tough question. The United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will be a major subject of reference in the discussions.

"Commitment to Future Generations — Building a More Tolerant Society"
Asahi World Forum 2018

The Asahi Shimbun Company, under the motto “Let’s think together and create together”, aims to evolve into a "comprehensive media business that provides information and services to enrich lives" centered on journalism. We are setting a major goal to contribute to solving global issues through our coverage on newspaper pages and digital media and through hosting various events.

The Asahi World Forum is the company’s annual flagship event. The main theme for 2018 is “Commitment to Future Generations-Building a More Tolerant Society”. We will invite domestic and overseas experts, policy makers, government officials, business people and NPO members to participate in sessions to be held over three days for in-depth discussions on measures to realize a tolerant society that overcomes conflict and discrimination due to difference in religion, belief, race, gender, etc.

This is the third year of the Forum. It has evolved from the Asahi World Environmental Forum, which started in 2008, to deal with a broader range of issues. This year, we intend to deal with more subjects that are included in the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals and consider, together with the audience, what we should do in order to “leave no one behind”.

Overcoming Divides for Our Future
Asahi World Forum 2017

We have been recently observing serious “divides” in our society, which are particularly visible in the U.S. and Europe. The Asahi World Forum 2017, with “Overcoming Divides for Our Future” as its main theme, will discuss if and how the human society can address the phenomena.

Also prominent in the agenda of the Forum will be the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SGDs). The goals are effectively a comprehensive list of pressing issues and challenges the world faces. There will be wide-ranging sessions to deal with some of the subject matters of the goals, including gender, responsible consumption and production, affordable and clean energy, and sustainable cities and communities.

This year is the tenth anniversary of The Asahi World Forum, which started in 2008 as the “Asahi World Environmental Forum” and assumed the current name and style last year. The Asahi Shimbun will continue to attempt to propose solutions to social issues through this Forum and other occasions.

We look forward to welcoming you at this ambitious event in Tokyo this October.

The new Forum will build on the wisdom that has been accumulated by its predecessor during the eight years and expand the scope of issues to deal with in a solution-oriented manner.
