Kisses and hugs: Japanese need to learn how to say goodbye!

　I grew up in a South American family - my father from Peru, my mother from Colombia. Even though I was born in California, I adopted lots of cultural customs from the Colombian and Peruvian sides of the family. One of these cultural customs was kissing and hugging goodbye.

　I am talking about a simple kiss on the cheek. It is normal for my family members to kiss and hug goodbye, even after a short meeting. We practice this custom among relatives who haven't seen each other for a long time.

　My parents never let me say goodbye without a kiss or a hug when I was a kid. In fact, it was an integral part of our family life to give a kiss to uncles, aunts and friends before parting.

　Try leaving home, for example, without kissing your mother goodbye - she would feel sore about it for weeks.

　Yet, for Japanese, this family ritual of ours seems a bit strange. Once, when I tried to kiss and hug some of my Japanese friends when saying goodbye, their reaction was a bit like duck-and-cover although I was expecting a warm embrace.

　Of course I don't force every one of my Japanese friends to kiss and hug me, but it would be great if some of them came to feel comfortable with it.

　Actually, I feel guilty when I don't give at least a hug to my close friends before parting.

キスとハグについて：日本人にも別れの流儀を学んでほしいのです

　私は、父はペルー、母はコロンビア出身という南米の家族のもとで育ちました。カリフォルニア生まれとはいえ、コロンビアとペルーの親族の文化的な習慣をたくさん身につけました。そのうちの一つが別れのキスとハグです。

　キスと言っても、ほおにする簡単なものですよ。うちでは、短時間しか会わなかったときでも、キスとハグをしてさようならするのが普通です。長いこと会っていない親戚とでも、この習慣はあります。

　小さい頃、両親はキスとハグなしではさようならを言わせてくれませんでした。実際、おじさんやおばさん、そして友人とお別れする時にキスをすることは、私たち家族の日常の欠かせない部分でした。

　例えば、母にさようならのキスをしないで出かけようとしようものなら、母は何週間もそのことで腹を立てていたものでした。

　でも、日本人からすると、この私たち家族の儀式は少し奇妙に思えるようです。以前、別れ際に日本人の友達にキスとハグをしようとした時、彼らの反応は、さながら身をかわして回避するかのようでした。私は温かな抱擁を期待していたのに。

　もちろん、日本人の友だち全員にキスとハグしてくれることを無理強いしませんが、何人かがそのやり方に慣れてくれたらどんなに良いかと思います。

　実のところ、別れる前に親しい友だちを少なくとも抱きしめるくらいしないと気がとがめてしまうのです。
